minihemp

BioBase® animal bedding is made from the woody core of environmentally grown fibre hemp. No insecticides or pesticides are used in the cultivation of fibre hemp. HempFlax® modern harvesting and production methods ensure stable litter of a consistently high quality.

The most important thing about hemp bedding is to disturb the bed as little as possible, removing droppings regularly and wet patches occasionally. Topping up as required.

The horse stalls does not have to be clean out entirely unlike other bedding. Saving in the cost for setting up again and labor.

Why use Biobase?

FAQ

Better absorption

The natural absorption capacity of hemp wood is considerably higher than that of conventional materials. Moisture, odours and ammonia are absorbed better and more rapidly.

Hemp bedding is ideal for horses’ hooves, as it forms a springy, insulating bedding. Hemp bedding structure prevents it from clogging the animal’s hooves. Acidification of stable litters such as wood shavings regularly leads to hoof damage. Farriers rarely come across incidents of hoof rot or other problems where hemp litter is used. Vets recommend the use of Hemp bedding.

Dust-free and moisture regulating

Great care has been taken to clean and refine each bag of BioBase® to ensure a consistent product. We have removed the dust and spores from BioBase® through a unique dust extraction process. You will find that BioBase® provide a very clean stable environment due to the dust extracted and ammonia absorbing qualities. Veterinary surgeons advise using hemp litter in the stable for horses with an allergy or respiratory problem. BioBase® is equally ideal for those caring for horses that suffer from similar complaints.

Benefits of BioBase®

Highly Absorbent
Hemp wood’s natural absorptive capacity is significantly higher than that of conventional materials. It makes a springy and insulating stable bedding BioBase is ideal for the horse’s hoof. Its structure prevents the material from clinging to the animal’s hooves.
Low Odour
BioBase® also absorbs ammonia very efficiently, reducing its harmful effects on the respiratory system, and reduces odour. Reduction in odour helps reduce flies. BioBase® is treated with eucalyptus oil, a natural antiseptic that reduces the growth of bacteria and is ideal for foaling stalls.

Economical to Use
Less BioBase® is needed to do the same job as other litters. With BioBase® high absorbency, wet areas tend to be smaller and noticeable less often. The particle size easily falls through pitchfork tines, ensuring very little bedding is removed during removal of manure. It is easy to use and cost effective.
Labour Saving
Using BioBase® saves on labour as the stable bedding can stay put in the stable for a longer period. Hence the consumption is significantly lower than of straw or wood shavings. It should be disturbed as little as possible, with the wet material removed as required.

Convenient
BioBase® is supplied in watertight heat-sealed polythene bales, which are convenient to handle and can be stored inside or out. Environmentally Friendly BioBase® is made from a sustainable source and is completely biodegradable. No trees were lost using BioBase®, thus reducing our carbon footprint.

How To Use Biobase

If the stable is clean and empty, it takes around 8-10 bales of BioBase® to create the initial bed in a typical 3.6 x 3.6 meter stable.

how to use biobase

Litter down a clean stable with one bale of BioBase® per one and a half to two square metres

biobase uses

Spread evenly over the floor, banking up sides if required.

Remove damp patches and manure daily with a fine-tined fork.

If a stable has an existing bed of shavings or chopped straw (or similar) there is no need to remove this completely before starting a BioBase® bed. Just spread out as normal, but gradually move existing bed towards the centre and add BioBase® round the sides over a period of time.

The important thing to remember about a hemp bed for your horse is to disturb it as little as possible. Removing wet patches and droppings regularly with a fine tined fork. Maintain the thickness of the bedding by replenishing with fresh BioBase®. The average amount for replenishing is approximately one bale per month. This depends on the level of maintenance and the horse’s habits.

There will be less bedding removed from the stable where BioBase® is used, making a smaller waste heap and decomposes quickly into a highly fertile organic compost or mulch for the garden.

BioBase® is unpalatable to virtually all horses, but if the bedding is seen to be eaten, sprinkle it with a weak solution of eucalyptus extract to discourage the habit. A horse that is eating its bedding usually indicates other problems such as a deficiency in their diet or boredom. In these cases please consult a vet.

Using BioBase® saves on labour as the stable bedding can stay put in the stable for a longer period. Hence the consumption is significantly lower than that of straw or wood shavings. Added advantages are: less storage space, labour savings and a reduced quantity of stable waste.

BioBase® also provides a hygienic and comfortable pet habitat due to the above qualities and after use is suitable for organic waste disposal and after composting it can be used as a biological garden fertilizer.

BioBase® is suitable for all hoofed animals and for use in poultry and rabbit farming. BioBase® is readily available at all major stockfeed supplies and pet stores.

BioBase® comes in bales of approx. 14 kg or 140 Lt.
